Activism in action

I got this from sf_drama:

After the men's ice hockey team paints a large breasted woman on a board in the common area of UNC (with the caption "Come watch us score"), the Feminist Students United group took action and painted an adjoined board with slogans such as "SEXISM AROUND THE CORNER" and "THIS IS WHAT RAPE CULTURE LOOKS LIKE." The ice hockey team is appalled, and immediately paints over the image and issues an apology.

Well done to the FSU for tackling the issue head-on, and kudos to the hockey team for admitting they were wrong, and taking on board what was said. I'm actually glad the story is getting a bit of publicity; I knwo that one of the reasons I'm sometimes reluctant to call people out on whatever-ist crap is the fear that they'll react badly.

Although to be fair, a (male) riend of mine recently posted something on LJ which referred to a female TV presenter, and basically suggeste that she must have slept with someone to get her job. I did speak up about that, pointing out that it was an offensive, unfair, and rather damaging thing to say. Another commenter got obnoxious about it, telling me that it's OK to make that sort of joke because no-one makes that sort of joke any more, and therefore it's totally not harmful, and refused to believe me when I said that actually people do, but the original poster took on board what I'd said, and was apologetic, which was nice.

God, I am so tired of this. I've seen it so many times with people using sexism or racism "ironically" and insisting that it has to be a joke because people don't mean that sort of thing. Why don't they get the hypocrisy inherent in that. Sexism and racism are still with us in part because of that attitude.

I've heard it called 'Hipster Racism'. Whatever it is, it's damn annoying.

Oh, it got worse; I pointed out that while he may not have witnessed people making those kind of jokes (other than, y'know, there in the post he was responding to, and his own response to it), I had, and I knew of many other women who had too.
No, he said; if people were going to make those sort of jokes, it would be in a blokey way, in front of men and not in front of women. And he, a bloke, hadn't experienced that. So clearly it doesn't happen. And oh, how glad he is that he lives in the real world, unlike me.

Fortunately various other people then pointed out that A) this wasn't Menz bingo, he could stop hitting _all_ the buttons now, and that B) actually, they had witnessed exactly this kind of crap too (with examples). He didn't respond to that. Too busy living in "the real world" where there is no sexism (other than his own, one presumes).

Headdesk. Though I am somewhat impressed that the team immediately retracted it, apologised and didn't attempt to justify it.

I am diligently not reading the comments.

Yup. Me three. Especially impressed that the team's signed up to attend the next FSU meeting and seem to have actually tried to educate themselves about the concept of rape culture.

Gives me a little bit of hope. :)
