Assumptions make an ass out of Assange-supporters

There've been a fair few posts about this in a community not far away but I thought it was time for a round-up of links on the Julian Assange rape allegations and the problematic nature of the support he's had from liberals.

Here are some links to feminist posts on the subject. (I'm skipping Naomi Wolf's post but it's referenced in some of the posts I am linking. That's because I've made a deliberate decision to link the posts I think are *good* and Wolf's was one of the problematic ones.)

I'll add more as I find them. Please share any other posts you've seen that you think rec-worthy or interesting.

Thanks for this. I've been meaning to look behind the seemingly pro-Assange headlines - this will make it a lot easier :)

I thought this was good, very fair and reasonable and balanced, but I was utterly astounded by some of the comments, claiming sensationalism and inability to check facts and jumping on bandwagons.

This article by Andi Zeisler over at Bitch is a great response to the woeful Naomi Wolfe article: http://bitchmagazine.org/post/douchebag-decree-wtf-naomi-wolf

PS previous comment deleted to correct my slandering of a perfectly innocent person - I'm currently reading Naomi Klein and typed her name instead of Naomi Wolfe's :)

Easily done! I also forgot to give Wolfe her ultimate 'e' and had to edit.

You'd have been better to refrain from editing, because she doesn't have one -- you are maybe thinking of Tom Wolfe, Gene Wolfe or Nero Wolfe?

A bit surprised that (so far) three out of three people on here don't seem to know how to spell the name of a quite significant writer on feminist issues, hoever much they may disagree with her thoughts about the Assange case...

I did know how to spell it and then I doubted myself. Never doubt yourself.

Here's Cath Elliott on the subject of dismissing rape allegations:

And, also, er, my humble self:

Of course, Assange is innocent until proven guilty. Nothing I've linked to contradicts that. But the way the justice system works means that accusers should also be considered truthful until judged untruthful. This might seem contradictory but it's a matter of not prejudging a trial.

Please note that anonymous comments are screened here - so the mods can judge whether or not they are appropriate for the community. I've unscreened this because it wasn't abusive but I wonder why you thought it needed saying?

This is an attack on Michael Moore.
